| Spain, the jewel of Western Europe! Spain forms both the sub-Pyrenean peninsula and the gateway to the heartland of Western Europe. You are never more than a few hours' drive from southern France, the Pyrenees (skiing in winter, hiking in summer), the seaside lunacy of Sitges (the gay capital of the costas), Romanesque and Gothic monasteries and churches, the Penedes wine country, the beautiful Costa del Sol in the south, and the rugged splendors of the northern Costa Bravo.
Madrid Located in the heart of the country, the Spanish capital is a vibrant, modern city of three million. Surprisingly compact and easy to navigate, newcomers find the city and its inhabitants open, accessible and welcoming. Whether sipping sangria in Plaza Mayor, discovering treasures at El Rastro's flea market, or exploring the many art galleries of Paseo del Prado, the activities of the daytime pale in comparison to events once the sun sets. For it is after dark when the city of Madrid wakes up: the endless restaurants, cafes and bars become full of life, not to return to sleep until the sun begins to rise again. Barcelona, the capital of Catalunya, has a zest for life, artistic genius and sense of style few cities can rival. Indeed, it is one of the most exciting cities on the western Mediterranean seaboard! Across Europe, this cosmopolitan center is among the most popular destinations. New bars, cafes and restaurants are springing up all over town as the city council keeps up a cracking pace in its campaign to clean up its most rundown quarters. Fortunately, Barcelona retains some of its rough diamond flavor with a grunge-chic inner city reminiscent of New York's East Village.

The job market in Spain is similar to its Western European counterparts. EU regulations require the hiring of Europeans over Americans, a rule that is inconsistently practiced. Thousands of Americans are teaching throughout Western Europe despite the regulations, however, most are working "under the table" as work visas are generally not issued to Americans. Barcelona is more difficult than in Madrid, or smaller neighboring cities. However, those that are determined to work in Barcelona and have the means to support themselves for two to three months, generally secure employment.
Our staff will work closely with you during your job search to give you as much information, guidance and support as you need until you have secured a teaching position. Late July through mid-September are slower months as many schools are closed during this time. Those requiring immediate employment following the course should consider attending our school in Prague or plan to go there after completing the program.
When you find work you will first be offered a small number of hours per week. This will increase as you become more experienced and the school is confident of your abilities as a language teacher. Most teachers work for more than one school.
Working full-time, which is 20+ hours per week, you will earn approximately 1000 Euros ($900) per month. Wages in Madrid are 12-18 Euros ($13-$19) per hour and 10-15 Euros per hour in Barcelona. You can expect salaries to increase with experience. A room in a shared flat will cost about 300 Euros per month in Barcelona and 350 Euros in Madrid. You can live comfortably but not extravagantly on the balance. |
