The Heart of Europe Prague is a fairy tale city in the heart of Europe. The "city of a hundred spires" is romantic, magical and mysterious. The compact medieval centre is a web of cobbled lanes, ancient courtyards, dark passages and churches beyond number-- an architectural smorgasbord of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau. This amazing city is watched over by the 1100-year-old Prague Castle high above the city, the largest ancient castle in the world.
This ancient city has become incredibly youthful as thousands of twentysomething Westerners have settled here, many supporting themselves by teaching English. Known in centuries past for its classical music and literary life, and in this century for ground-breaking visual arts and cinema, Prague has in recent years become a magnet for top-flight jazz, rock and post-rock.
The Czech Republic is an active job market with 75 private language schools in Prague alone. Jobs are also available in public schools, universities, corporations and government. Central Europe is an excellent place to get started in this field.
For those interested in teaching in the more competitive markets of Western Europe, the Czech Republic is an excellent first step into neighboring countries. We suggest you first work in Prague for six months or so to get your feet wet, gain confidence and experience for your CV (resume).
You do not need a special visa to enter the Czech Republic, enter with your passport as a tourist. Do not mention school. You will be granted a 90-day stay. Once you are working, your employer will help you obtain the correct work papers and residency permit. This will give you medical coverage as well as legal work status. Having your green card will also entitle you to better prices for recreational and cultural events.
Working full-time, approximately 27 hours per week, you will earn 24,000 Kc (Czech Koruna) per month, which is $700. A small studio or room in a flat will cost the equivalent of $200-240 per month. You can live comfortably, but not extravagantly, on the balance. Your money will go further if you decide to work in a smaller city outside of Prague.
Finding permanent housing in Prague is often more difficult than securing a job. You may have to move a couple of times before you find appropriate housing, another reason to travel lightly.
